My greatgrandfather James Pace was a LT. in the Mormon Battalion that came here to San Diego. I have a bio. of his trip. Would highly recommend the seeing the building in Old Town here in San Diego. It is free of charge and opened to the public.
Pvt. Henry Weeks Sanderson of Company D is my great grandfather. The plaque commemorating the Morman Battalion was a great event at his graveside in Fairview, UT. He was apparently only 17 when he joined the Battalion. Thanks for a great web page!
I have enjoyed you website on the Mormon Battalion. I have 3 ancestors Willard Gilbert Smith,Co. D, Thomas Woolsey, Co. E, and Lisbon Lamb, I'm not sure what company he was in. I would love to here from anyone who has more information on any of the above. Thanks for your hard work!

I am a decendant of Abraham Day and Daniel Henrie and have some info on the lives of these pioneers and members of the USMB.
I am looking for any stories from Mormon Battalion decendents that give a glimps in their everyday life, or stories that would give striength to our generation. I'm a singer, song writter, working on a project CD, folk songs that tell the story of the Mormon Battalion and the Mormon trail. I"m a decendant of William Gribbel and would love to hear from any other decendants & do you have any stories to share?
For a great read on the Mormon Battalion, get a copy of Will Bagley, Army of Israel: Mormon Battalion Narratives (Logan, UT: Utah State University Press, 2000). It is an outstanding documentary history of this epic unit and march.
What an excellent thing you have done!! Just a word about Joseph Taylor (Co. A). My father William Warren Child told me stories about this grandfather. Joseph was a strong man. The men had to put a rock in their mouth so it wouldn't be so dry. On the march when a man would fall to the ground, the leaders would tell the other men not to help them. They said that if the men couldn't make it on their own, then they were to be left behind. Well, my ggrandfather couldn't stand that, so at night, when the other men were asleep, he would slip out of camp, go back along the trail, and find the men, and carry many of them on into camp, sometimes not finishing his task until morning. Then he would be ready to go on again with the battalion. My dad said that he did this night after night, because he couldn't stand to leave anyone behind. This may be a little known fact, and there may have been others who did this also, but, I just thought his story should be told. I do feel these were great men, and I for one am so grateful for them, and for this site that honors them!
I am very greatful for this site. What a wonderful job! I am a decendant of Capt. James Brown Jr. from Company C and am interested in contact from any of my "cousins" and in any stories of him. James Brown also went to Sutters Mill in California and was there during part of the gold rush there.
I am a descendent of Charles Perrin, a private in Company D. Family lore has it that after arriving in San Diego with the Mormon Batallion, Charles Perrin traveled north to Sacramento with Jean-Baptiste Charbonneau, whom he had befriended along the way. That put them in the right place at the right time to take part in the Gold Rush. Charles Perrin supposedly did quite well for himself, arriving back in Iowa, where his family had waited, with a mule laden down with much gold. With that gold he purchased the land which became the Perrin family farmstead, where his descendents to my grandfather lived. The farmstead is in present-day Moorehead, Iowa, although it was Preparation City at that time. This story was first told to me by my grandfather's cousin Lorna Perrin Wetzel, who still lives in Moorehead and holds title to the old farmstead.
I would love to hear from anyone who can confirm any of this story, or provide more details, particularly on the friendship between Charles Perrin and Jean-Baptiste Charbonneau. Thanks for putting up the informative web site!
I am a descendent of James Louis Thompson of company C as well as a descendent of Alexander Stephens of company D if anyone has information about either of these men please e-mail me.

Great Site! My Great, Great Grandfather William S.S. Willes was in the Battalion. Went on to Sutters Fort to work during the winter & was present when gold was discovered. Also founded Mormon Island on the American River downstream from Sutters Fort.
I thought the page was informative. But it needs more of the history of the battalion. I was in a play in '97 and I found it to be a rewarding experience.

In searching for information about Martin Luther Riser, this site came up. I enjoyed viewing your project. I am also interested in the Private John J. Riser and the C John Risser 25 you list. My great, great, great grandfather was John Riser, although I am not sure if either of these are relevant and was looking for his picture. However, I could not find a picture of him. My search relative Martin Luther Reiser/Riser is to try to clarify which was the immigrant who came to America, Adam or Martin Luther Riser since there are many versions given in various family histories being done. Good luck with your project and thank you for sharing.
I am looking for any help on my present assignment,a campaign study on the 12 month mission of the Bn. The actions I have mostly clear, thanks to the San Diego site. What I need are any leads on "official" orders-plans-documents from or by the gov't or commanding officer, Lt. Col. Cooke.

This Battalion holds a very special place in the military history of The United States Army. Their very long and over extendedroad march has yet to be equaled. The history, honors and glory were very well deserved.
Capt. James Brown, Company C, is my great grandfather. He married Phoebe Abigail Abbott on 17 Oct. 1850 in Ogden, Utah. I am searching for information on his grandparents, William and Margaret Brown, Rowan County, North Carolina.

Orlando Fish Mead, William Wallace Casper, and Ebenezer HanksUntil I visited this site, I didn't realize that Orlando Fish Mead, my 3 gg father, had served in the Mormon Battalion. I also had never seen a photo of William Wallace Casper, my 4th gg father until logging on at this tremendous site. I did already know about Ebenezer Hanks, my 3rd gg father and Kerry William Bate has written a very good biography about him that's on file at BYU's Harold B. Lee Library. I was present at the memorialization of the Ebenezer Hanks grave site, but am searching this website to see whether William Wallace Casper and Orlando Fish Mead have been memorialized. Both men are in the FamilySearch databases, but I can provide what I have about their burial sites should they remain unmemorialized.A smart salute to Eagle Scout Brian!

Greetings from the East: I am a member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneersand I have The History of Tooele written by the DUPMy fourth great grandfather, Francis Xeveres Lougy was oneof the original settlers of Tooele. His stepfather,Phineas Remington Wright, was in the Mormon Battalion and his name is on the monument at the San Diego BattalionVisitor's Center.I am confused about why Phineas is not listed in theOriginal Roster. I have personally seen his name on themarker in San Diego and it's also mentioned is in afamily history that was written by one of my maternalgrandmother's relatives, Thelda Nix, who was in the DUP in Tooele. How does one verify that their ancestor should be on theRoster? I know he was a private and I believe he was inCompany B.Also, I have a strong feeling I know the national commander of the Battalion--I grew up in San Diego and knew a powerfully spiritual mannamed George R. Bascom who was in the stake high council...My oldest daughter, Bethany,(now 20) went on a Pioneer trek about5 years ago in Gettysburg, PA and they pushed 900 lbAmish handcarts..One of the 14 year old boys in her group saw the pioneers in vision there...Kathryn Blosemodern-day pioneer in rural southcentral PANewport, PA
Jefferson Hunt is my great, great, great grandfather and Iwould like to compare notes with anyone that has additionalinformation on him and his descendants. The information listedin this website shows Jefferson as having two wives and apparantlyquite a few children with Celia Mounts, but none given with Matilda. However, he did have a son named Marshall (you have it spelledMartial) but you don't name him as a son. My records show Marshall'sbirth date in 1829 and would have been approximately 17 yearsold at the time of the Battalion. You have information on a coupleof his children (one 13 years old and another as an infant) but nothingon him. Your website is great . . . keep up with the good work.
I'm a descendant of three Battalion members:Robert Cowden Egbert (Company A)Franklin Weaver (Company A)Daniel Coon Davis (Captain, Company E & Re-enlistment)I'd like to correspond and compare notes and photos with other descendants of these three men. Thank you!

Through a little detective work I discoverd John’s old cabin he lived in. It is currently being used as a pig pen. John is buried in the Neeley cemetary. A silver plaque is at his grave site commemorating John being part of the Mormon Battalion.

12.V.00 Addressing the interesting exchange between Mr J.P. Sargent and Senor Rogelio Aguilar of April 29, I'd like to say that notions of 'Manifest Destiny' and 'Lebensraum' may indeed be(cautiously)compared. Moreover, to claim that the Mexican-American war was fought to prevent the spread of slavery - that it was not an imperialist venture - should raise the eyebrows even of the descendents of the soldiers of the Mormon Battalion. Philip E. Steele - historian & descendent of Horace Martin Alexander, officer in Company B.
My thanks to Dr.VNK and Col.Thomas for linking me to this site. Well done! Re: Senor Aguliar's comments, while the War with Mexico will remain a controversial one, Mexico was far from being a weak and defenseless country. John Eisenhower is but one historian who provides a balanced look at the relative military assets of both countries. On paper, Mexico should have won the war. [Captain Braxton Bragg's artillery not withstanding...] Further, the issue of the expansion of slavery rather than imperialism was a greater consideration in the comments of Lincoln et al. The instability of the Mexican Government and the machinations of the British certainly were forces that added to the war, while a peaceful settlement was reached on the Canadian boundary issues. A comparison of the Mormon Battalion to the Nazi Blitz is at best hyperbole.
Althoug I appreciate the value of historic research and the difusion of knowledge like the one your doing with this nice website, I must diverge because I could never find as patriotic defense the action of the MB but indeed brave and temerarious. It wasnt an honorable defense of your endengered country, like is stated, but the participation in a wicked and planned invasion against a weaker and peaceful nation in order to plunder more than half of his territory. This was akcnoledge by figures like Lincoln, Ulysses Grant, Nicholas Trist, Corwin, Thoreau, houndreds of historians and anyone with a clear and honest mind, even if some still dont like it to hear, the truth its the truth. Wouldnt be sad and twisted to consider as patriotic defense belligerent acts like the attack on Pearl Harbor, the nazi blitzkrieg, etc?DIOS Y LIBERTAD

I WAS HAPPY TO SEE A PICTURE OF MY GREAT GREAT GRANDFATHER 2ND LT. OF CO. B AND ADJUTANT PHILEMON CHRISTOPHER MERRILL, BUT NOTICED YOU HAD NO PHOTOS OF HIS SISTERS, WASHERWOMEN ALBINA AND PHOEBE LODEMA MERRILL, OR NEPHEW FERDINAND MERRILL. I HAVE NEWSPAPER CLIPPING PHOTOS FROM ORBITURARIES AND AN INTERESTING LONG ARTICLE ON THE TWO SISTERS AS THE LAST SURVIVORS OF ORIGINAL PIONEER WOMEN. WOULD THIS BE OF INTEREST FOR INCLUSION. I ENJOYED REVIEWING YOUR SITE AND CONGRATULATE YOU ON THIS GOOD WORK; THE WEBSITE SHOULD REALLY ADVANCE YOUR GOALS. BEST WISHES.
My great-great grandfather's brother, William Wesley Willis, was the first sergeant at the muster in, and later made 2nd Lt. of company A. When the battalion reached New Mexico, he was given a detachment of sick to take to Pueblo, Co. Although he never reached San Diego, his musket is preserved today in the visitor's center in San Diego. Wonderful site! If anyone would like additional information about William Wesley Willis, or his brother, Joshua Thomas Willis, please email me at taunwillis@hotmail.com
Great grandson to David Pulsipher. Member of Mormon Battalion. I live in Mesa Az. With my wife Julie Peterson and have 7 children.
March 11, 2000 I was very pleased to find my great-great-grandfather Horace Martin ALEXANDER among the officers of Company B.Although my great-great-grandmother was pregnant at the time - July of 1846 - Horace signed up with the Mormon Battalion and marched the 2,000 mile trek to San Diego. In May, 1847 - there in San Diego - he learned that his wife Nancy Reeder Walker had died at Winter Quarters that January. It wasn't until later that year that he found out that the son she had bore them - Horace Martin Alexander Jr. - died three after his mother's death, January 31, 1847.Horace and his surviving daughters - among them my great-grandmother Frances Evaline Alexander, who later married Jesse Pierce Steele in Salt Lake - were reunited in Utah in 1848. The girls and their maternal grandmother Nancy Crissie Walker (whose husband Oliver Walker died in 1843 in Nauvoo) crossed out to Utah in the company of Brigham Young.I think of them all with sadness, respect, pride and with love.
Brian you have done a great service for us all. I am the GG grandson of Thomas Charles Davis Howell, a private in Co. E.. Thanks for helping preserve our heritage. Tom
A great responsibility to maintain the heritage of these men and women and their example of faith
In the Church News ending August 24 1996 page 5 there was a picture of a few members of the Mormon Battalion. The 50 year anniversary of mustering of the battalion. Will someone please identify them for me ?
Looking for information on Richard Hatton who stated that he was a member of the Mormon Battalion.
In viewing one of your sites of Co. A. you have a inacurate name. You have Martial Hunt and it should be Marshal Hunt, he was one of Jefferson Hunts sons.
I had a individual on my father's side, with the surname of PACE. I have a some information on him. I am willing to exchange information on him and the PACE family.
My 3rd ggfather was Samuel Miles. I have visited his grave in St. George, UT and several sites in N and S California that he lives/passed through. I have walked parts of the Carson River Route and Trajedy Springs where the last members of the Battlion blazed the wagon road east on their way back to SLC.
My Brother is a re-enactor and we are proud of our forebearers that served with honor and distinction."Give me the mountain" should have been their motto.THANKS
